Wow! What great conditions across all bands. I more than doubled my QSO and score goals. New W8 record. Not bad for a first big DX contest using SO2R from the new station.
Several times, I was on 15 and thought the bands were going flat. I would check 10m, and it was much better than 15!
It was almost like the bands took a break Sunday morning and then came back twice as good Sunday evening. The Euros were super loud on 20. 10m stayed open hours after European sunset both days.
10m opened great to Japan at their sunrise at the end of the contest. No polar flutter and super loud signals. That helped my score.
Everything worked better than expected (maybe it was just the great conditions!). A big gap in my station design was the inability to do SO2R on 10/15. Just had the tribander for those bands. I used the 40m dipole to work a few mults (even with 2.5:1 SWR, the PGXL would transmit). I really missed 2BSIQ when 10 and 15 were open for 15+ hours. Probably cost a few hundred QSOs.
I have the 15m beams built and ready to go up. My bad for playing radio instead of hustling them up the tower over the past few weeks.
With 90 minutes to go, I had the tribander on the south tower pointed NW to work JA on 10/15. I was tuning 20 and heard a PY. I turned the 5-el 20 on the north tower to the South. I heard the front end of the K3 on 15m stop working as soon as I hit transmit on 20. The two antennas were 100′ apart, pointing right at each other (on almost the same elevation). In many, many years of SO2R, I have never blown out a radio. Also, never had antennas this close together… Don’t have a spare K3 so limped home with just one. Need to get it fixed before Sweepstakes CW!
The station works better than expected—no interstation issues except for the blowup at the end.
The quality of RTTY operating just keeps getting better and better. Nice that we can spread out above the “digital divide.” We need to get all those FT ops to use the same setup for RTTY…
Multipliers worked out great. Took lots of patience to tune through 75+ kHz of RTTY to find them. Worked only one station in NM and one in VT. I missed Ohio on 10m!!
I had a lot of requests for a repeat of my location. Partly from now being in OH after 30+ years in MA. And partly because 599 04 OH was printing as 599 04 9H. I guess the shift to letters was being missed. Not sure how to fix that. Is it me or them?
The integration of 2Tone and MMTTY into Writelog is amazing. Sure nice to have two decoders running. Lots of times one would have perfect copy and the other would be gibberish.
